Option 2.  Follow coach tour route as a self drive tour, staying in same hotels… you may wish to travel to Scotland as a group and then divide into self drive and some of your party on the luxury coach, we can accommodate all your needs. SEE BELOW...

Option 3.  Self Drive Tour of 11 nights, guest houses/Bed and Breakfast accommodations for 11 nights.  Following the same route as the coach tour but staying in different accommodation.  This package includes; 11 nights accommodation, rental auto shift car, first night welcome dinner and farewell dinner in Glasgow (same hotel as coach tour), whisky tasting and storyteller, tour notes and suggestions where to eat/drink throughout your stay.  COST PER PERSON £970 pounds sterling.  Upgrades are available.   Flights not included, please see our terms and conditions prior to booking.

An Eleven Night Self Drive Tour

to coincide with the gathering, fully endorsed by the Clan MacLachlan Society.

 

10 June         Arrive into Scotland, make your way to the city centre hotel (taxi or coach from airport) in Glasgow.  With time to relax from your flights or some free time in Scotland’s largest with suggestions on where to explore.  Welcome to Scotland dinner and drink, meet mcleanscotland and fellow clanspeople, find out about more about this exiting tour.

11 June         Collect rental car and set out for Clan Lands in Argyll.  Driving alongside the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond to Tarbet (with the option of a boat trip on the loch).  Turning west traverse the glens of Argyll through “rest and be thankful” mountain pass  to Inveraray on Loch Fyne where, staying for the next few nights.  Some free time to explore locally, there is much to see, the jail, castle, ship museum, or just wander round the town, there are many choices in town for dinner including your hotel.

12 June         Clan events.  Friday lunchtime – opening ceremony.  Friday early evening – reception at the castle.  Friday evening – ceilidh in the marquee (possibly, more when we know what is certain).

13 June         Clan events.  Saturday throughout the day – lectures, displays, Highland dancing, music, drama all in the grounds of the castle.  Saturday evening – dinner and ceilidh in the marquee adjacent to the castle

14 June         Clan events, Sunday morning – church service. Sunday lunchtime – closing ceremony.  At the end of the Clan gathering - head off north to the Great Glen, where you travel along Loch Ness to Fort William.  With many interesting stops en route including Glencoe, Rannoch Moor, Ballachulish and Fort William itself where you stay overnight. Dinner not included.  Tonight we will introduce you to a highland Jacobite, telling you the story of Culloden and how it decimated the highland clans and their way of life. This is included for you!

15 June         Why not take a steam train journey?  The Jacobite steam train has featured in the Harry Potter movies and is one of the most spectacular rail journey’s in Europe.  The train arrives at Mallaig where you have some free time before returning via Glenfinnan.  The Glenfinnan monument was erected to commemorate the 1745 Jacobite rising. Visit the Fort William distillery, Inverlochy Castle ruin, or just wander around Fort William. Go up Ben Nevis, our highest mountain which has a lift to the top or take a boat trip along Loch Linnhe.  Consider visiting Skye and all the superb attractions and scenery it has to offer, only short drive and sailing away!  Overnight Fort William.  Dinner not included. 

16 June         head east along the great glen, stopping at the Well of the Seven Heads, Fort Augustus, Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle before arriving into Inverness.  Pay a visit  to Culloden Battlefield, where a decisive battle took place in April 1746 and ended the clan system in Scotland.  Clava Cairns is also well worth a visit only a mile away – standing stones and burial cairns, fascinating!  Your day ends in Pitlochry, highland Perthshire at a lovely garden hotel high above the town.  Dinner will not be included tonight,  but an enjoyable evening with a whisky expert, who will introduce you to the delights of "the water of life", whisky sampling and nosing, is!.  Even for those who do not like whisky, it is very interesting.  A nice end to a great day.

17 June         Today there are choices – you can have a whole day free or visit the Crannog, a fantastic insight in to how people lived many centuries ago on the water.  Then visit Dewar’s World of Whisky, for a distillery tour and nip. Consider Glamis Castle, a superb castle in Angus with beautiful gardens.  A very scenic tour. For those who would like a round of golf, Pitlochry has good courses for which we would be happy to supply information. Also a scenic drive to Killin and the Falls of Dochart. Dinner not included tonight.          

18 June        This morning what about heading for St Andrews, where there is time to see the castle, abbey and the famous golf club.  Then it's on to Edinburgh, our Capital City arriving around mid-late afternoon, still plenty of time to see the city sights.  Dinner will be on your own this evening as there is so much choice here.   We will give you personal recommendation on pubs/restaurants advising those that pre-booking may be required.

19 June         A free day in Edinburgh, best explored on foot.   We will give excellent ideas and suggestions for sightseeing, shopping etc  in your fully bound tour notes. Dinner again will be on your own this evening as there is so much choice.

19 June         Leave Edinburgh heading for Glasgow via Rosslyn Chapel on the outskirts of the city.  It is now world famous with the movie and novel The Da Vinci Code.  This is a superb place to visit.  Check into the hotel in city centre Glasgow before we have our farewell dinner, included in this package.

20 June         Transfer to the airport at Glasgow this morning to meet your flights, dropping off your rental car.
