A Superb 6 Night Scotland tour

for Clan Montgomery

27 July; depart Edinburgh for Inverness, via Perth and Pitlochry, with a visit to Scotland's smallest whisky distillery; Edradour. Staying overnight in Inverness.

28 July; a day trip including Culloden Visitor centre, a visit to Glenfiddich whisky distillery and a dram of course. Returning back to Inverness via the coast road stopping at Elgin cathedral. Overnight Inverness.

29 July; we leave Inverness and drive west along the Great Glen, stopping to view Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness. From here we continue along the loch to Fort Augustus where we take another wee stop. Lunch can be taken at Spean Bridge woollen mill further along our route. We travel through the most infamous glen in Scotland; Glencoe, scene of the massacre of the MacDonald's. We stop for our overnight stay at Inveraray.

30 July; a superb day of classic Scottish historic sightseeing; see and touch over 5000 years of ancient Celtic and Scots history, standing stones, burial cairns, ancient hill fort (ruin), Knights Templar graves. An easy day as we return to Inveraray in time for a late afternoon stroll, maybe even visit the castle? Overnight Inveraray.

31 July; we head through wild mountain passes, to Loch Lomond this morning. Maybe take a boat on the loch, time for this as we spend the lunch hour here at Tarbet. From here we travel south along the loch road towards Glasgow, where we stay tonight; this is our largest city!

1 August;  the final day here in Scotland. A day trip to Montgomery country as we visit Eglinton Castle just a short distance north of Irvine. This was one of the chief possessions of the Montgomery Clan for two centuries and the site of the lavish Eglinton Tournament in August 1839, a mock medieval tournament that featured the future Emperor Napoleon III of France as one of the combatants! Today all that remains of the castle are some ruins, the building having fallen into disuse and being used for naval gunnery practice in World War Two. A sad ending for such an important building. Our day ends as we check into the hotel near the airport.
