CITY
BREAKS in Scotland
Scotland has very few cities in fact
- most of them are in the central belt. Glasgow,
Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Stirling and
Perth.
For any city break we will ask just a few
questions: how many in your party and how long do
you wish to stay? Then, which city?
Edinburgh is our capital and second largest
city. Sometimes referred to as "auld reekie"
sometimes called Edinburrow or Edinboro by our American
cousins, we don't mind. It is a city to walk in,
do not even think about a car here. Walk the Royal Mile,
the old and new towns, see all the sights, the city is
full of pubs, inns and restaurants apart from
attractions!
Glasgow - the largest city and most
vibrant. It is full of excellent shops (the best
selection outside London), pubs and dining out are
excellent. It's nightlife is superb and the
people friendly. Often called "Glasgee"
by locals, who in turn we all call "Weegies".
It is a great place to spend a few days in. Sadly
it does not have a castle, but it more than makes up for
this with museums!
Aberdeen - the granite city. Built from
local stone, with wonderful buildings and bridges, it
grew recently with the oil from the North Sea Rigs, it
still is a busy city with fishing, commerce and of
course - a pub or two!
Dundee - famous for jute, newspapers and
preserves. A busy place that is undergoing many
changes, particularly the waterfront area. Also
the home of the ship Discovery that took Captain Scott
to the Antarctic, a good museum here.
Inverness - capital of the Highlands. With
its castle, battlefield (Culloden) and history right on
the doorstep, this is a favourite with visitors and one
of ours too!
Stirling - famous for the castle, Bannockburn,
Robert the Bruce and William Wallace. This lively
city is well worth stopping at on your tour, the castle,
Bruce museum and Wallace monument can take a day just to
see them!
Perth - the argument continues - a city or
not? We like to think it is, we are called the
"Fair City" are we not? Full of history,
see the Old Maids house (from Sir Walter Scott novel
"the fair maid of Perth") with it's date still
there to see. There are 3 castles, a palace, museums,
shops and lovely countryside surrounding it, it is well
worth a stop.
