Sport in Scotland & Ireland

18 July 2010; Sir Alex Ferguson, manager of the Mankies, now most people who know me, know I dinnee like the Mankies (Manchester United), but - I have to applaud Alex just now! "I was offered to manage the England team, of course, it was just out of the question," he said. "It's a poisoned chalice anyway - I think it's a terrible job - plus the fact that I would have had a tremendous handicap being Scottish. No matter which way you look at it, that's important." Well done that Scotsman.

3 March 2010 - Scottish football team beats Czechs! This great news, considering we didnee play that well (in my view), our passing was awful and we gave the ball away too much and missed chances as usual. But to be positive, it's the first win for our new manager and the Czechs are in our group in the European draw, so good news!  21 November 2009; NOT ONLY DID SCOTLAND BEAT THE AUSSIES IN RUGBY; but ENGLAND were soundly thrashed by New Zealand - oh happy days! see story below and live web links.

We have a saying in Scotland "I support Scotland and who are ever playing England!"

My country has been an embarrassment to the sporting world - I ask for forgiveness for the whole of France"  He played for France against The Republic of Ireland in a world cup qualifier. SHINTY  Scotland V Ireland: 2009

Shinty/Hurling International  Saturday, October 31, 2009 The Bught Park Inverness The annual clash between Scotland and Ireland: Scotland's native game of shinty versus Ireland's native game of hurling. Shinty is among the fastest, most physically demanding and skilful sports in the world, with the ball exceeding 100mph. Scottish emigrants to Canada played shinty on ice in winter, giving rise to the game of ice hockey. www.shinty.com    www.gaa.ie    It went to injury time and Ireland won.  But there’s next year. BBC 2’s live coverage alone was a tribute to the sport.

A big part of my existence revolves around sport and in particular, football and rugby. These are the two big sports for me, but saying that, I am also a big fan of shinty.

world famous Glasgow Celtic football club doing the huddle

above; Hampden Park, home to Scotland. Why do so many countries welcome the tartan army with open arms? easy; we are loud, colourful and cause no trouble, och aye, normally the local pubs sell out fast! www.perthshiretartanarmy.com

The Tartan Army (happy to say I am a proud member. I follow my national team, but come on lads, we need win something! My other football teams; coming from Oban originally, there are no big football teams, just shinty, so who do you choose? er, aye well, Catholic and half Irish - who else; Glasgow Celtic. I also lived a long time (from an early age) in Liverpool, now that famous city has so many things the same as Glasgow - 2 big teams, the river, the docks, a huge Irish population and, a superb sense of humour!

I follow both teams, but what happens when they meet (as they have done several times in European games)? It's Celtic. Now Celtic dinnee like the Rangers much and equally, Liverpool dinnee like Manchester United at all! And after the dreadful events at Hillsborough when (too) many Liverpool fans died (at the blame of the local police), who came first to Liverpool with a charity match? CELTIC. Celtic were the first British team to win the European Cup, Liverpool are the British team to have won it most - 5 times. What do both teams have in common? The King Kenny Dalglish played for both. The first official league game Liverpool played was full of Scots! All their famous managers were Scots! AND OF COURSE BOTH CLUBS SING "YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE" and both "FIELDS OF ATHENRYE" (although Liverpool sing fields of Anfield Road).

CURLING a Scottish sport, we arrange curling tours here in Scotland and in October 2010 we have a special fun curling and whisky event where everyone is welcome.
